Rancho Carrillo is a master-planned community of just over 1500 homes that sits in a picturesque canyon in Carlsbad surrounding the historic Leo Carrillo Ranch Park.

Located about 30 miles north of San Diego and about 4 miles inland from the Pacific Ocean in Carlsbad, Rancho Carrillo straddles both sides of Melrose Ave. just south of Palomar Airport Rd. and north of Alga.

Rancho Carrillo is the perfect spot for walkers, runners and bicycle riders because the trails within the community connect to the San Marcos trails to the East and Bressi Ranch trails to the West. From the ridges, you can enjoy breath-taking views of the ocean and hillsides.

In Rancho Carrillo, you can enjoy biking and walking on the beautiful canyon trails or swimming and sunning at the swim center.

The centerpiece of Rancho Carrillo is the Leo Carrillo Ranch Park, a public park that features the original hacienda and other outbuildings that were part of Leo Carrillo’s large ranch. It’s a perfect spot to picnic and in the summer the City of Carlsbad hosts outdoor movie nights there in the park.

You are also close to Alga Norte Park, one of Carlsbad’s newest parks. It offers everything from a skate park to ball fields, a dog park and Olympic-size swimming pool. 32-acres of fun!

Dining & Shopping

Rancho Carrillo offers easy access to major commuting routes as well as shopping. The Bressi Shopping Center is a one-stop location for all of your weekly errands from grocery shopping to dry cleaning. You have a variety of nearby options available for casual dining – including Rubio’s, Tommy V’s, Board & Brew, Luna Grill and more. Of course, being so close to Melrose and Palomar Airport Rd., you have easy access to lots of shopping options in La Costa and San Marcos as well.

Schools

Children in Rancho Carrillo are fortunate to attend San Marcos Unified School District Schools. Carrillo Elementary is located near the center of the community making it easy for many families to walk to school. After elementary school, students attend San Elijo Middle School and San Marcos High School.

Two of the area’s most reputable independent schools are located on the outskirts of Rancho Carrillo. Aspirations is an early education experience for ages 3 months to kindergarten inspired by the Reggio Emilia approach to learning. Pacific Ridge School located between Rancho Carrillo and Bressi Ranch serves 7th-12th grade and offers a rigorous academic program inspired by Harkness Learning that incorporates global engagement and service learning.

As you explore Rancho Carilllo, you can almost feel the history of Leo Carrillo’s ranch. The open space, nature preserve and walking trails keep you connected to nature. In fact, it’s not uncommon to see wild peacocks who still make their home in Rancho Carrillo.

Neighborhood Spotlight

Leo Carrillo Ranch Park is a 27-acre historical park that was once a former working rancho owned by actor Leo Carrillo. Adobe buildings, antique windmills and other historic structures provide a peek into California’s history. Leo Carrillo Ranch Park is connected to the citywide trails system along the 4-mile long Rancho Carrillo trail.

Self-guided walking tours of the building exteriors and park grounds are available during normal park hours and free guided walking tours are offered on the weekends. So, grab your walking shoes and enjoy!
